Artist BioOur Story
We repainted our house in March 2013 – it looks gorgeous! But, when I looked out to our courtyard and took stock of the faded, shredded and shabby barbecue cover made who knows where, I knew I needed to find a new cover to go with our freshly painted house. I spent futile months searching the internet and garden stores for the right cover. When I realised there weren’t many options I was certain there were other proud homeowners who’d love to have something unique to cover what is quite a big piece of equipment in the garden. I wanted to provide that enhancement and knew it was a great business idea.
Although I spent months looking into durable fabrics and a lot of time talking to friends and family about what we could make them with, I absolutely knew I wanted to use an already existing product that could be upcycled. One day a friend mentioned the vinyl bags made in Europe from recycled truck banners and a light bulb went off in my mind. Discarded billboards!
That first summer 2013/14 was hectic with the family lugging and cutting massive billboards (which can weigh up to 60 kg) at the local playground. Now we store and cut at our local Bowling Club for which we are very grateful for the space. Our small team is Trish on cutting, and Sarah sews each one up with marine-proof thread – local hard-working Mums. We’re creative, we’re proud of our workmanship, and we’re deeply committed to making a difference to the planet for our children.
So far our focus has been on barbecue covers. BBQ Skins offer the practicality of a durable, easy care vinyl but they go a lot further. We’re constantly on the look-out for used billboards and our shop will be regularly updated. Also, we’ve got some cool new product ideas so pop back and visit even if there isn’t anything that suits you or your garden right now!
You’ll find us in the summer at the Thorndon fair, Martinborough fair, Loyal in Churton Park and the Sustainability Trust in Wellington.
Each BBQSKIN is a unique fun piece of art for your outdoor space. The billboards have already been out in all Wellington weathers and once they’re hand scrubbed front and back, they’re ready to protect your barbecue for many seasons to come. As they’re UV protected they won’t fade and they don’t shred like some of the mass produced covers. We use marine-proof thread and we’ve improved our latest stock by adding Velcro straps to further secure your BBQSKIN in place. We guarantee our quality workmanship. Made proudly here for our New Zealand weather conditions.
By buying this cool SKIN you’re not only protecting your barbecue, you’re also lessening the impact on the environment as these billboards could end up in landfill. We’re often updating our site so if there isn’t anything that grabs you now, please pop back to take another peek!
